Maurille is a Dutch artist known for her raw work, striking colour palettes, and poëtic visuals. Using fragile, picturesque and quiet aspects, growing up in the 1970-ties in a small town, and the rawness of the city of Utrecht where she moved to when she was 17. Here she found the artists, the outsiders, the music, pure emotions and simply the raw side of life. To which she was drawn.
“I am mesmerized by both the rawness and the fragility of life. I can be captured by the patina of an old motorbike, like I can see the history of the bike, where it has been who has been driving it and feel deeply sorry for a run over hare on the side of the road. Discovering myself, connecting with those fragile and raw aspects and digging in deeper with every creation”
At the heart of her paintings lie endless life experiences. She explores vulnerability and the raw emotional roller-coaster of being alive. Her work is very intuitive and based on emotions and thoughts. They mirror and reflect on personal experiences, moments of joy and sorrow. Taking these experiences and placing them in front of her on the canvas is her way of experiencing life in full. Her work is colorful and the mark-making reflects her immediate thoughts, emotions and the way she see the world, translating the stories she carries within her creations.
Her work is defined by intense colors, strong contrasts, intuitive and raw marks, and a unique interplay between spontaneity and intention, often unveiling the emotions of life. As a colorist, Maurille deliberately harnesses the power of color to create emotional depth and visual tension. Beneath the surface, her paintings subtly and enigmatically address our inner world, life questions, inviting deeper reflection.
Maurille’s work is meant to challenge, provoke, and inspire contemplation—it can unsettle, disrupt, or simply invite the viewer to dream and play. Her paintings exist in the tension between beauty and unease, between order and chaos, urging the observer to explore what lies beneath the surface of colors and forms.
